Operation Sindoor (J&K): 07 May 2025
In 2025, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar Sharma was serving with the 5 Field Regiment of the Indian Army, which was deployed in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir, along the Line of Control (LOC). The 5 Field Regiment operated under the overall command of XVI Corps, also known as the White Knight Corps—an important formation of the Indian Army. The corps was raised on 1st June 1972, with Lieutenant General J.F.R. Jacob serving as its first General Officer Commanding (GOC). Its headquarters is located at Nagrota Cantonment in the Jammu district of Jammu and Kashmir. The LOC, a 740-kilometre stretch within Jammu and Kashmir, forms a part of the 3,323-kilometre-long border that India shares with Pakistan. This region remains one of the most volatile and sensitive zones, with frequent ceasefire violations and unprovoked attacks initiated by Pakistani forces. These violations are often used as cover for terrorist infiltration attempts, carried out with the active support of Pakistani security agencies. The threat is further heightened by coordinated attacks led by the Border Action Team (BAT) — a specialized group comprising personnel from Pakistan’s special forces and heavily armed terrorists. On the night of 07 May 2025, the Pakistani forces initiated heavy shelling and gunfire, targeting Indian forward posts and surrounding civilian areas. Mortar rounds and artillery shells landed dangerously close to inhabited villages, posing a grave threat to both soldiers and civilians.
The attack occurred shortly after Operation Sindoor—a precision military operation launched by the Indian Armed Forces on May 7, 2025—in retaliation for the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22. The Indian strikes targeted terrorist infrastructure deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), aiming to dismantle training camps and launch pads used for cross-border terrorism. In the wake of these strikes, Pakistani forces resorted to unprovoked firing along the Line of Control (LoC), escalating tensions in the region. During one such incident, one of the forward posts of 5 Field Regiment came under sudden and intense enemy fire. Amidst the heavy exchange, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar Sharma displayed exceptional bravery. He held his position and carried out his duties with remarkable courage, but tragically sustained grievous injuries during the exchange of fire. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his wounds and was martyred in the line of duty. Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar Sharma was 32 years old at the time of his martyrdom. A dedicated and brave soldier, he upheld the highest traditions of the Indian Army through his service and sacrifice. His sacrifice stands as a reminder of the enduring vigilance, courage, and commitment of the Indian Army in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and ensuring the security of its citizens.
