LOC Firing: 19th Jan 2018
India shares a 3,323-km border with Pakistan, of which 221 km of the IB and 740 km of the LOC fall in Jammu and Kashmir. The LoC is highly active and volatile where ceasefire violations occur very often and without any warning. The year 2017, recorded the highest number of ceasefire violations in the past decade resulting in the death of 35 people, including 19 army personnel and four BSF men. Another ceasefire violation took place in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district along the LOC on 19 Jan 2018.
On 19 Jan 2018, at around 6:30 pm, Pakistan Army troops initiated unprovoked firing on Indian posts from across the border in the Sunderbani sector, prompting the Indian troops guarding the LOC to retaliate strongly and effectively. Lance Naik Sam Abraham was manning a forward post in Sunderbani sector during that period. The heavy cross border firing continued for 12 hours and during that exchange of fire Lance Naik Sam Abraham got severely injured and later succumbed to his injuries. Lance Naik Sam Abraham was a committed soldier who laid down his life in the line of duty while serving his motherland.
Lance Naik Sam Abraham is survived by his wife Anu Mathew, daughter Angel, father Mr. Abraham John and mother Mrs. Saramma.
