A talented boxer, he won Gold Medals in the Boxing Championships for three consecutive years, further underscoring his competitive spirit and resilience.

Inspired by a deep sense of patriotism and a desire to serve the nation, Abhay chose a career in the armed forces. His dedication and hard work culminated in his commissioning into the Indian Army in September 2000. He was commissioned into the 69 Field Regiment of the Regiment of Artillery, popularly known as the "Queen of Battle" for its decisive role on the battlefield.Soon after commissioning, Lt Abhay Pareek was posted to Jammu & Kashmir along the Line of Control (LoC), one of the most challenging and sensitive operational areas in the country. As a young officer, he embraced the demanding responsibilities of military service with courage, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to duty. His leadership qualities, enthusiasm, and devotion to the nation quickly earned him the respect and affection of his comrades and superiors alike. Though his journey was cut short, Lt Abhay Pareek left behind a legacy of excellence, courage, and selfless service. His life remains an enduring inspiration for future generations, exemplifying how dedication, perseverance, and patriotism can shape an extraordinary life of purpose and honour.

Op Parakram : 10 June 2002

During Operation Parakram, Lieutenant Abhay Pareek's unit was deployed along the Line of Control (LoC), occupying a forward position barely 100–150 meters from enemy posts. The operation had been launched in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament in December 2001, which brought India and Pakistan to the brink of war and created a tense environment of sustained military confrontation along the border. As a young and dynamic officer of the Regiment of Artillery, Lt Abhay was entrusted with the crucial responsibility of serving as a Forward Observation Officer  (FOO). Operating from a highly exposed forward location, he was tasked with observing enemy activities, directing artillery fire, and providing real-time battlefield intelligence. The role demanded exceptional courage, tactical acumen, and leadership, as Forward Observation Officers often worked under constant threat from enemy fire. On 10 June 2002, the already volatile situation along the LoC escalated into intense cross-border firing. Displaying remarkable composure and professional competence under fire, Lt Abhay immediately took charge of the situation. Accurately assessing enemy positions, he directed a massive and devastating artillery bombardment on hostile posts. The precise and effective fire assault inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and caused significant damage to their defensive infrastructure and military assets.

While leading operations from the forward area, Lt Abhay became a direct target of enemy retaliation. During the fierce exchange of fire, an enemy anti-tank guided missile struck near his position, causing him grievous injuries. Despite being critically wounded, he displayed extraordinary courage and unwavering determination. As he was being evacuated from the battlefield, he remained calm and composed, refusing to let his injuries diminish his soldierly spirit. In a moving display of military bearing and devotion to duty, Lt Abhay saluted his Commanding Officer and senior officers, warmly shook hands with his fellow soldiers, and boosted their morale even in his final moments. His last words to his comrades reflected his indomitable spirit and unshakeable optimism: "Main wapas aaonga... I shall come back." Despite the best efforts to save him, Lt Abhay Pareek later succumbed to his injuries. He made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation while defending India's frontiers. His courage, leadership, and selfless devotion to duty continue to inspire generations of soldiers and citizens alike. Lt Abhay's life remains a shining example of valour, patriotism, and the highest traditions of the Indian Army. Though, Lt Abhay Pareek  may have created a void in the lives of his family members but as an exceptional officer and a brave soldier he will continue to inspire future generations.

Lt Abhay Pareek was my senior subaltern in 69 Field Regiment. I have very vivid memories of him. He was less of a senior and more of a strong buddy or brother to me. We use to train together in unit as lieutenants and went for Young Officers course together. We shared the same room during YO’s for six months. On return from YO’s i got deployed on OP in poonch and he in naushera. And then we missed him on this day. I cried my heart out sitting in my bunker at the OP, however was unfortunate to not even get a chance to say him final good bye as i was operationally deployed and firing was continuing day in day out. I have known him as a courageous, innocent and big hearted man. You could ask him to do anything for you anytime and he would walk along with you without a second thought. Such a courageous, chivalrous young man he was. Miss his presence so much to this day. Many many salutes my dear brother !
