His enthusiasm for physical activities was evident from a young age, and he showed particular talent in Taekwondo, winning numerous accolades at state and national levels. Alongside his athleticism, he was a gifted poet and painter, with a love for creative expression that made him a well-rounded individual. These qualities helped shape his personality, balancing his strong physical abilities with an insightful and artistic side.

After finishing his schooling, Lt Amit pursued higher education and completed his graduation in Chandigarh. His ambition to join the Armed Forces was unwavering, and soon after graduating, he turned his dream into reality. He successfully cleared the Combined Defence Services Examination, a competitive gateway to joining the Indian Army, where he sought not only a career but a lifetime of purpose and service. On 22 September 2007, Lt Amit was commissioned into the Army Ordnance Corps, a branch responsible for the vital task of material and logistical support in both wartime and peacetime operations. As part of the Army Ordnance Corps, he quickly adapted to the demands of military life, embodying discipline, dedication, and leadership.

Lt Amit’s first posting was in Jammu and Kashmir, a region with high stakes and constant challenges. Assigned to the 8 Bihar Battalion of the Bihar Regiment, he immediately found himself in an area of significant operational importance. Despite being newly commissioned, Lt Amit approached his duties with remarkable maturity and enthusiasm. In J&K, Lt Amit embraced the harsh terrain and operational demands with steadfast resolve, driven by a sense of duty that was visible to all who served alongside him.

Gurez Sector Avalanche : 17 Nov 2008

During 2008, Lt Amit Beniwal served with the 8th Battalion of the Bihar Regiment, which was deployed in the challenging and volatile region of Jammu and Kashmir. Lt Beniwal held the significant responsibilities of Ghatak Platoon Commander and Avalanche Rescue Operation In-charge, roles that demanded both leadership and specialized skills. His unit was stationed in the Gurez Sector along the Line of Control (LOC), an area known for its harsh and extreme weather conditions, especially during winter. This sector was particularly notorious for its susceptibility to deadly avalanches, which posed constant risks to the soldiers stationed there.

On November 17, 2008, a catastrophic avalanche struck the region, engulfing the area and tragically burying three soldiers from an area domination patrol under tons of snow. The sudden and devastating nature of the avalanche created an urgent and life-threatening situation, calling for immediate action to rescue the trapped soldiers. Upon receiving the distressing news, Lt Amit Beniwal was promptly tasked with the search and rescue operation under the leadership of Major Ajay Upreti. Demonstrating his commitment and readiness, he immediately mobilized the necessary equipment and troops to embark on the rescue mission. Despite the extremely hostile weather conditions and the severe risk to his own safety, Lt Beniwal understood that every second counted in such critical situations. His sense of duty and comradeship drove him to press forward with the rescue efforts, displaying exceptional bravery and selflessness.

As the team proceeded with the rescue operation amidst the treacherous conditions, Lt Beniwal continued to lead by example. However, during this valiant effort, he too became a victim of the avalanche, getting trapped and ultimately buried under the snow. Despite the grave danger, Lt Beniwal's unwavering resolve and leadership shone through as he prioritized the safety and rescue of his fellow soldiers above his own well-being. The brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice alongside Lt Amit Beniwal include Maj Ajay Upreti, Nk Kishore Dung, Nk Bhukan Oroan, Nk Amrit Lal Horo, L/Nk Saiba Baskey, and Sep Chandan Kumar Jha. Lt Amit Beniwal's actions during this tragic event highlighted his cold courage, exceptional comradeship, and leadership of the highest order. He laid down his life in the service of the nation, embodying the noblest traditions of the Indian Army. His sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the selfless dedication and bravery that soldiers exhibit, often in the face of insurmountable odds.

Lieutenant Amit Beniwal is survived by his father Shri Krishan Kumar Beniwal and brother Shri Sumit Kumar Beniwal.
