Lt Col V Vinay Bhanu Reddy

Lieutenant Colonel Vuppala Vinay Bhanu Reddy hailed from Bommala Ramaram village in Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana. Born on 20 April 1980, he was the son of Shri Narsimhma Reddy and Smt Vijayalakshmi, and grew up in a close-knit family with an elder brother, Uday. From a very young age, he nurtured a deep aspiration to serve the nation in uniform—an ambition that steadily shaped his academic focus, discipline, and outlook on life. His unwavering determination bore fruit when he was selected for the National Defence Academy (NDA), one of the most prestigious military training institutions in the country. Upon successful completion of his further training at IMA Dehradun, he was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery, a vital combat support arm of the Indian Army renowned for its heavy field guns and decisive role on the battlefield. During his initial years of service, he gained valuable experience in conventional artillery operations, laying a strong foundation for his future military career.

Driven by a desire to expand his professional horizons and take on greater operational challenges, he later volunteered for the Army Aviation Corps. After undergoing rigorous training, he qualified as a helicopter pilot, transitioning into a role that demanded exceptional flying skills, sound judgment, and the ability to operate in demanding and often hostile environments. Over the years, he steadily honed his expertise, participating in a wide spectrum of air operations and building a reputation as a highly capable and dependable aviator. On the personal front, he married Ms Spandana, and together they were blessed with two daughters, who became a source of strength and pride for him. By 2023, with over two decades of distinguished service, he had risen to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. By this stage of his career, he had firmly established himself as a professionally accomplished helicopter pilot, known for his operational competence, leadership qualities, and steadfast commitment to duty—reflecting the finest traditions of the Indian Army.

Cheetah Helicopter Air Mission: 16th Mar 2023

During March 2023, Lt Col Vinay Bhanu Reddy was serving with an Army Aviation Squadron based in Assam, a region that routinely demands flying in some of the most challenging terrain and weather conditions in the country. The squadron operated the Cheetah helicopter, a light, single-engine aircraft of 1970s vintage, derived from the French Alouette. Despite its age, the Cheetah had long proven its worth in the Indian Army due to its exceptional high-altitude performance and reliability in extreme environments. The five-seater Cheetah was a versatile, multi-role, and highly manoeuvrable helicopter, designed to operate across a wide range of weights, centre-of-gravity limits, and altitudes. Rugged in construction, it was routinely employed for commuting, observation, surveillance, logistics support, casualty evacuation, rescue operations, and demanding high-altitude missions, particularly in the Himalayan region. Flying such aircraft required not only technical proficiency but also sound judgment, calm decision-making, and deep familiarity with mountain flying.

On 16 March 2023, Lt Col Vinay Bhanu Reddy, along with his co-pilot, Major A Jayanth, was tasked with one such operational high-altitude mission. As per the operational plan, the crew took off from Missamari in Assam, bound for Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, a route known for its unpredictable weather, steep gradients, and limited emergency landing options. While en route, the helicopter developed a serious technical snag, rendering the aircraft uncontrollable. Both pilots were experienced aviators with substantial flying hours on type; however, the sudden nature of the malfunction left them with very little time to recover or stabilise the aircraft. Despite their best efforts, the helicopter crashed near Mandala in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, in extremely rugged and forested terrain. Immediately after the crash, a massive search and rescue operation was launched by the Indian Army, with assistance from personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). After an intensive search, the wreckage was located in the dense hills near Bangjalep village, approximately 40 kilometres northwest of Bomdila. Both Lt Col Vinay Bhanu Reddy and Maj A Jayanth had sustained critical injuries in the crash and, despite all efforts, succumbed to their injuries, attaining martyrdom in the line of duty. Lt Col Vinay Bhanu Reddy was known as a deeply committed soldier and a highly competent helicopter pilot, respected by his peers for his professionalism, courage, and dedication to mission accomplishment. His supreme sacrifice stands as a solemn reminder of the risks routinely undertaken by Army aviators to sustain operations in some of the most inhospitable regions of the country, in unwavering service of the nation.

Lt Col Vinay Bhanu Reddy is survived by his father, Shri Narsimhma Reddy, mother Smt Vijayalakshmi, wife Major Spandana (A doctor in the Army), two daughters and brother Shri Uday Vuppala.
