Major K. Manoj Kumar hailed from Haripad in Alappuzha district of Kerala, a region known for its rich cultural heritage and patriotic spirit. He belonged to the Army Ordnance Corps (AOC) of the Indian Army, one of the most vital logistical arms that ensures seamless operational readiness of the armed forces. Throughout his distinguished service career, Maj Manoj Kumar served in various Army units, contributing significantly to the efficiency and preparedness of military operations. The Army Ordnance Corps (AOC) plays a crucial role in providing logistical and material support to the Indian Army during both war and peace. Its primary responsibility is to ensure the timely availability of all essential stores to Army units—at the right place, at the right time, in the right quantity, and at the right cost. The inventory managed by the AOC is vast and diverse, covering nearly every conceivable requirement of a soldier and military establishment. This includes everything from clothing, equipment, spare parts, and engineering tools to weapons, ammunition, armored vehicles, and battle tanks. In simple terms, the AOC is responsible for supplying “from a needle to a tank,” including all categories of munitions, except fuel, fodder, and medical supplies, which are managed by other specialized branches.

By ensuring uninterrupted supply chains and efficient inventory management, the AOC acts as the backbone of the Indian Army’s combat capability, enabling frontline troops to operate effectively under all circumstances. During 2016, Major Manoj Kumar was serving with the prestigious Central Ammunition Depot (CAD), Pulgaon, one of the largest and most strategically significant ammunition storage facilities in India. Located approximately 115 kilometers from Nagpur in Maharashtra, CAD Pulgaon spans an extensive area of over 7,000 acres and houses a wide range of ammunition, explosives, and military ordnance stored securely across numerous specialized sheds. The Central Ammunition Depot (CAD) Pulgaon functions directly under the control of Army Headquarters and plays a vital role in the national logistics framework of the Indian Army. It is responsible for receiving ammunition and explosives from Ordnance Factories and other authorized sources, maintaining these critical war reserves, and ensuring their distribution across the country. From CAD Pulgaon, ammunition and explosive stores are systematically supplied to various Ammunition Depots and Field Ammunition Depots to replenish operational stocks and maintain combat preparedness. This chain of supply is essential for ensuring that frontline units, especially during emergencies or military operations, never face shortages of critical resources.

As an officer serving in such a strategically important establishment, Maj Manoj Kumar was part of a highly critical logistics and ammunition management system that directly supported the operational capability of the Indian Army. His role reflected dedication, responsibility, and commitment to maintaining the readiness and strength of India’s defense forces.

Explosion at CAD: 31st May 2016

In May 2016, Major K. Manoj Kumar was serving at the strategically important Central Ammunition Depot (CAD), Pulgaon, in Maharashtra. As one of the largest ammunition storage facilities of the Indian Army, CAD Pulgaon played a critical role in maintaining and supplying ammunition and explosives to military formations across the country. Serving in such an establishment demanded immense responsibility, technical expertise, and unwavering dedication, qualities that Major Manoj Kumar exemplified throughout his service. In the early hours of 31 May 2016, tragedy struck when a devastating fire broke out in one of the ammunition sheds at approximately 01:30 AM. The depot housed vast quantities of highly sensitive ammunition and explosives, making the situation extremely perilous. Even a small fire had the potential to trigger catastrophic explosions and spread rapidly across adjoining sheds, posing a grave threat not only to the depot but also to nearby personnel and installations. Recognizing the severity of the crisis, emergency response teams were immediately mobilized on a war footing. Among those who responded without hesitation was Major Manoj Kumar, who displayed exceptional courage, leadership, and calmness under extreme pressure. Fully aware of the life-threatening danger posed by the fire and volatile explosives, he led from the front, joining fire-fighting teams and fellow soldiers in an urgent effort to contain the blaze before it could spread further.

Major Manoj Kumar played a crucial role in coordinating and supporting operations aimed at isolating the fire and preventing a chain reaction of explosions in neighboring ammunition sheds. His quick decision-making, unwavering determination, and fearless commitment significantly contributed to confining the fire to a single shed. This heroic effort helped avert a catastrophe of far greater magnitude, potentially saving countless lives and preventing massive destruction of critical military stores.As the fire intensified, the situation rapidly worsened. Powerful explosions began erupting from within the affected ammunition shed, turning the entire area into a deadly zone of fire, smoke, and flying debris. Despite the escalating danger and the near certainty of mortal risk, Major Manoj Kumar refused to step back. Demonstrating extraordinary devotion to duty and selfless bravery, he continued his efforts alongside fellow soldiers to safeguard lives, protect the depot, and minimize further damage. In this courageous and selfless act of service, Major K. Manoj Kumar made the supreme sacrifice, laying down his life in the line of duty while trying to save others and protect vital national assets. The tragic accident also claimed the lives of Lt Col Ranjit Singh Panwar and 15 brave soldiers of the Defence Security Corps (DSC), who stood firm in the face of unimaginable danger. Major Manoj Kumar’s actions on that fateful day reflected the highest traditions of the Indian Army—courage under fire, leadership in crisis, and service before self. His bravery, dedication, and ultimate sacrifice remain a powerful testament to the spirit of an officer who chose duty over personal safety and stood steadfast until his final breath in service of the nation.
