Major Monoj Kumar Bhandari

Major Manoj Kumar Bhandari hailed from Kulgad village in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, a region renowned for its deep-rooted military traditions and long-standing association with the armed forces. He was born to Shri Nar Singh Bhandari, and from an early age, he grew up imbibing the values of discipline, courage, and service to the nation. Surrounded by stories of valour and sacrifice, he developed a deep admiration for the Indian Army, which gradually transformed into a resolute ambition to serve the country in uniform. Driven by this dream, he pursued his academic and personal goals with determination and focus. His hard work and dedication ultimately bore fruit when he was commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army, marking the proud beginning of a life devoted to national service. Major Bhandari was commissioned into the 6th Battalion of the Dogra Regiment (6 Dogra), one of the most decorated and battle-hardened infantry regiments of the Indian Army. The Dogra Regiment is renowned for its gallantry, steadfast discipline, and outstanding operational effectiveness.

Over the decades, the regiment has carved an illustrious legacy through its participation in numerous wars and operations, earning an enduring reputation for courage and professionalism. Since the early 1990s, 6 Dogra has been actively deployed in Jammu and Kashmir, playing a pivotal role in counter-insurgency operations in some of the most volatile and challenging environments. As a young officer of 6 Dogra, Lt Manoj Kumar Bhandari underwent rigorous military training that tested both physical endurance and mental resilience. He quickly proved his mettle as a capable, committed, and courageous leader. Whether leading his troops during demanding operational tasks or attending to their welfare and morale, he consistently upheld the highest traditions of the Indian Army. After serving for some time in the Army, Major Bhandari married Ms Manju, daughter of Shri Harish Rawat, who later went on to serve as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. She stood by him as a pillar of strength, supporting him throughout the demanding and challenging course of his military career. After serving for a few years with his parent unit, he was subsequently deputed to serve with the 40 Rashtriya Rifles battalion, deployed in Jammu and Kashmir for counter-insurgency operations.

Anantnag Operation (J&K): 20 Apr 2002

In 2002, Major Manoj Kumar Bhandari was serving with 40 Rashtriya Rifles (40 RR), a battalion deployed in the Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir along the Line of Control. The region was highly sensitive, marked by persistent militant activity that posed a continuous threat to peace and stability. Operating in such an environment demanded not only professional competence but also exceptional courage, alertness, and composure under constant pressure. The battalion functioned under the operational control of XV Corps, popularly known as the Chinar Corps, headquartered at Srinagar. Entrusted with overseeing military operations across the Kashmir Valley, XV Corps bore the critical responsibility of maintaining security in hostile terrain under ever-present militant threats. Life for the soldiers of 40 RR within their Area of Responsibility was one of relentless vigilance. Every patrol, search operation, and cordon-and-search mission carried the risk of ambushes, infiltration attempts, and sudden, close-quarter firefights. Despite these dangers, the battalion continued to operate with determination and resolve, denying militants freedom of movement in the region.

On 20 April 2002, security forces received credible intelligence inputs indicating the presence of militants in the Anantnag district. Acting swiftly on this information, 40 RR launched a well-coordinated counter-terrorism operation. As part of the operation, Major Manoj Kumar Bhandari led his team to the suspected location to flush out the militants and prevent their escape. As the troops closed in on the target area, they came under heavy and accurate fire, and a fierce gun battle ensued. Demonstrating exceptional courage and leadership from the front, Major Bhandari engaged the terrorists at close range. In the intense exchange of fire, he succeeded in eliminating two militants, dealing a significant blow to the hostile group. Even after being grievously wounded during the firefight, Major Bhandari continued to fight with exemplary valour, inspiring his men and ensuring the success of the operation. However, during the heavy exchange of fire, Major Bhandari sustained critical injuries. He was evacuated for urgent medical treatment, but despite the best efforts of the medical team, he succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom. His supreme sacrifice epitomised the highest traditions of the Indian Army. Major Manoj Kumar Bhandari was a dedicated, fearless, and committed officer who laid down his life in the line of duty while safeguarding the nation.

Major Manoj Kumar Bhandari is survived by his wife, Smt Manju Bhandari.
