Major Ajay Kumar SM

aMajor Ajay Kumar hailed from the historic city of Varanasi and was born on 14 November 1964. From an early age, he was deeply inspired by the idea of serving the nation in uniform. This aspiration shaped his formative years and, upon completing his education, he chose to pursue a career in the Indian Army. He was commissioned into the 13 Mechanised Infantry battalion of the Mechanised Infantry Regiment—an arm of the Indian Army known for its mobility, firepower, and a distinguished legacy of valour and battle honours. Upon commissioning, he joined his field unit, where he quickly adapted to the demanding life of a combat officer. Through dedication, discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility, he developed into a capable and dependable officer, earning the respect of his peers and subordinates alike for his professional competence and soldierly qualities. Apart from his military duties, Major Ajay Kumar was also an enthusiastic sportsman. He had a particular flair for athletics and excelled in track events such as the 100-metre and 400-metre races. His sporting spirit reflected his physical fitness, competitive mindset, and determination—qualities that complemented his role as a soldier.

In 1987–88, during the Indian Peace Keeping Force operations in Sri Lanka under Operation Pawan, the then Lieutenant Ajay Kumar was deployed as part of his unit. This early exposure to active operations provided him with valuable combat experience and strengthened his operational acumen. Later, during 1996–97, he was deputed to serve with the Assam Rifles in Manipur, a region affected by insurgency. Operating in the challenging terrain of Ukhrul district, he participated in several counter-insurgency operations. His conduct during this tenure highlighted his courage, tactical understanding, and ability to operate effectively in complex and hostile environments. Subsequently, he was posted to Jammu & Kashmir, one of the most sensitive operational areas in the country, and was promoted to the rank of Major. In this demanding environment, he demonstrated exceptional initiative by developing a reliable network of intelligence sources within his Area of Responsibility. Leveraging this intelligence, he successfully planned and executed multiple counter-insurgency and counter-intelligence operations, contributing significantly to maintaining security and stability in the region. Over the years, Major Ajay Kumar established himself as a dedicated officer, a skilled tactician, and a leader who led from the front—embodying the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

Operation Rakshak : 19 May 1999

During the late 1990s, as militancy intensified in Jammu & Kashmir, Major Ajay Kumar’s unit—13 Mechanised Infantry—was deployed in the Anantnag district of South Kashmir as part of Operation Rakshak. The unit was actively engaged in counter-insurgency operations and was also responsible for manning forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Anantnag sector. This sector was particularly volatile, frequently witnessing ceasefire violations and repeated infiltration attempts by militants from across the border. Such infiltration bids were often supported by heavy artillery shelling and coordinated actions by the Border Action Teams (BAT) of Pakistani forces. In this challenging operational environment, the unit maintained relentless pressure on militant networks through continuous surveillance, aggressive patrolling, and intelligence-based operations. Major Ajay Kumar played a pivotal role in these operations. On 5 August 1998, leading from the front, he successfully led a team that eliminated three hardcore militants within the unit’s Area of Responsibility (AOR), showcasing his tactical acumen and fearless leadership. As part of sustained counter-insurgency efforts, the unit regularly conducted area domination patrols to deter militant movement and maintain control over sensitive regions. On 19 May 1999, Major Ajay Kumar was leading one such patrol along a designated route. During the operation, his team was suddenly struck by a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast, laid by militants to target security forces.

Major Ajay Kumar bore the full impact of the explosion, leaving him with grievous injuries and no opportunity to mount a response. Despite the best efforts of his comrades, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. Major Ajay Kumar was a dedicated and courageous officer, known for his professionalism, calm resolve, and exemplary leadership under challenging conditions. He laid down his life at the young age of 34 years, upholding the highest traditions of the Indian Army. In recognition of his courage, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal.
