Major Pradeep R Tathawade KC

Major Pradeep Ramachandra Tathawade hailed from Kendur Pabal village in Shirur Taluka of Pune district, Maharashtra. Born to Shri Ramachandra Krishnarao Tathawade and Smt Kusum R. Tathawade, he was the second of three children in the family, with an elder brother, Milind, and a younger sister, Sushma. Raised in a disciplined and value-oriented environment, Maj Pradeep displayed qualities of determination, leadership, and patriotism from an early age. His journey towards a military career began when he secured admission to the prestigious Sainik School, Satara, where he studied from Class V onwards. The school played a pivotal role in shaping his personality and nurturing his dream of serving the nation in uniform. The rigorous academic environment, combined with military-oriented training and discipline, laid a strong foundation for his future career in the Armed Forces. His dedication and hard work eventually earned him selection to the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 1980, one of the country's premier institutions for training future military leaders.

After successfully completing his training at the NDA and the Indian Military Academy, Major Tathawade was commissioned into the Indian Army in June 1984. He joined the 8th Battalion of the Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry (8 JAK LI), a regiment renowned for its valour, professionalism, and distinguished battle honours. As a young officer, he quickly adapted to the demanding life of a soldier and demonstrated exceptional commitment to duty. Over the next sixteen years, Major Tathawade served in a variety of challenging operational and field areas across the country. His assignments exposed him to diverse terrains, difficult conditions, and complex military situations, enabling him to develop into a highly competent and battle-hardened officer. Through his unwavering dedication, leadership abilities, and professional excellence, he earned the respect and admiration of both his superiors and the soldiers under his command. By the year 2000, he had established himself as a seasoned infantry officer with extensive operational experience and an unflinching commitment to the service of the nation.

Poonch Operation(J&K): 17 June 2000

In June 2000, Major Tathawade's unit was deployed in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, where it was actively engaged in counter-insurgency operations against militants. On 17 June 2000, the battalion received credible intelligence regarding the presence of a group of heavily armed militants in Shahpur village of Poonch district. At the time, Major Tathawade was officiating as the Commanding Officer of the battalion. Recognizing the importance of swift action, he decided to launch an operation against the militants and personally lead the assault team. Acting promptly on the intelligence input, Major Tathawade and his troops moved to the suspected area and established contact with the militants. When challenged and asked to surrender, the militants responded with intense gunfire, triggering a fierce encounter. A heavy exchange of fire ensued as the soldiers closed in on the militants' position. During the intense firefight, Major Tathawade noticed two militants attempting to break away from the cordon. Displaying remarkable alertness and courage, he engaged them immediately and shot both militants dead. However, in the midst of the action, a third militant launched a surprise attack from behind. Major Tathawade grappled with the militant and both men rolled to the ground. The militant managed to break free and fired at him from close range, hitting him in the stomach and thigh.

Despite sustaining grievous injuries and losing a considerable amount of blood, Major Tathawade refused to withdraw from the battle. Demonstrating extraordinary determination and indomitable fighting spirit, he continued to engage the militant and succeeded in eliminating him. Even while severely wounded, he remained focused on the mission and continued to direct the operation. He repeatedly instructed his men to maintain their positions and not approach him until all the militants had been neutralized or captured, placing the success of the operation and the safety of his troops above his own life. The operation ultimately ended in success with the remaining militants being eliminated. Only after the area had been secured was Major Tathawade evacuated to a military hospital. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom in the line of duty. Major Pradeep Ramachandra Tathawade displayed courage, leadership, and devotion to duty of the highest order. His fearless actions, exceptional leadership under fire, and supreme sacrifice upheld the finest traditions of the Indian Army and exemplified the spirit of selfless service to the nation. In recognition of his exceptional bravery, unyielding fighting spirit, and supreme sacrifice, Major Pradeep R. Tathawade was posthumously awarded the "Kirti Chakra," India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award. His legacy continues to inspire generations of soldiers and citizens alike.

Maj Pradeep R Tathawade is survived by his wife Smt Leenta Tathawade, daughter Bhagyashree, and son Sagar.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal….
Even after 20 years now, the intensity and pain of Pradeep’s absence is still being strongly felt by all his friends and family members alike. Dear friend, you are gone but not forgotten.
I had the privilege to be by his side for the better part of his life. Our journey together commenced right from his child hood at Sainik School Satara (Mah) in Class 5th. A robust sportsman, a humble human being, a helpful individual, Tatya (as he is known to all his classmates) was an excellent combination of robustness of a rural lad and the sophistication of a city bred child. Unassuming that he was, he rarely spoke but when he did, only pearls flowed. It was his encouragement that created my interest in football. His magnanimous nature to always take hostel friends home for a meal, showed what real hospitality was. Thank you Aie for those delicious home cooked dishes I have enjoyed at your place.
    Those we love can never be more than a thought away;
for as long as there’s a memory, they live on in our hearts.
Not the topper kind of a guy in academics but Tatya was always amongst the top 10 percentile. In fact he was the right material that Army looks for – physically fit and mentally strong. So his selection to the NDA’s Jun 1980 Course (B/64) in his very first attempt, was no surprise to anyone. Being in the same SSB Batch with him, I was privy to and envious about the ease with which he made friends even with strangers (fellow SSB mates) right from alighting at the Allahabad rly station. I still feel that our selection to NDA for the same Course was largely thanks to his supportive nature.
He had the eye that saw the best in a person, a heart that used to forgive the worst, a mind that forgot the bad and a soul that never lost faith in the God.
Although we parted ways after NDA (he joined the Infantry, inspired by his fauji maternal uncle and I went to the Engineers), we were always in touch through the postman. Listening to his and his Unit’s (8 JAK LI, the Bravest of the Brave) achievements of the 1985-87 times in Sichen was my favourite activity during the JC Course that we later did together. That was also the time Linata walked into his life as his better half. Earlier, we had cleared the PABT together but he was lucky to get to fly helicopters at Patiala and Andamans. The memories of their often coming to our home at Ambala with little Bhagyashree and Sagar are still vivid in my mind…..
20 years ago on 17 June 2000, a good heart had stopped beating, fighting the terrorists in the J&K’s Rajauri-Poonch Sector. Tatya was privileged to lay down his life and thus make the supreme sacrifice for the nation. The grateful Country honoured him with one of the highest Gallantry Awards – the Kirti Chakra. This gallant soldier’s physical absence notwithstanding, by the age of just 36 years his heart had touched so many lives that it even today lives on in so many that it loved.
Pradeep, you had instilled so much self confidence in your parents, siblings and in Linata vahini that they are all pretty successful in their respective ventures. You must be feeling proud to see the success your children have achieved by now. Keep blessing them all and your innumerable well wisher who flock the Tathawade Udyan at Kothrud, Pune and proudly salute your statue every single day.
You are our inspiration dost. Keep us on your right side as always…. Jai Hind……

……. Brig Anand Thakur, Retd, G/64

My sister lives just next to the Tathwade Udyan, a public Garden in the prime location of Karve nagar,Pune. I have passed by and visited this garden umpteen number of time only to realize today that the garden is dedicated to this braveheart military officer. It would have been also not possible for me to connect the dots about Maj. Pradeep Tathwade, the way I am able to now, had my batch mate Dipak from College of fisheries , Ratnagiri , who is also Maj. Pradeep’s Sainik School mate, not told me about Maj. Pradeep.
I am sure Dipak also doesn’t know that there is a fabulous public garden dedicated to Maj. Pardeep Tathawade’s sacrifice.
In the memory of this courageous officer I bow million and one time to pay our tribute to his sacrifice and shall feel inspired forever now….And my next visit to sister’s place and thereafter always shall make me visit first to Tathawade Udyan and pay my respect and then go to my sister’s house.
Major Pradeep Amar Rahe, Jai Hind
