Naib Subedar Suraj Tamang belonged to Sipaidhura in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. was posted with 44 Assam Rifles in 2015. By 2015, Nb Sub Tamang had already put in 31 years of service in the Army and developed into a dedicated and disciplined soldier. During 2015 he was serving with 44 Assam Rifles deployed in Manipur for counter insurgency operations.

Nb Sub Tamang’s unit 44 Assam Rifles was engaged in operations against the insurgents active in the North East. On 26 Oct 2015 Nb Sub Tamang was leading an area domination patrol at Kamjong in the Ukhrul district of Manipur. In a pre-planned attack, the suspected Manipur rebel outfit Peoples Liberation Army (PLA), ambushed the patrol party. The militants were heavily armed and fired at the troops from vantage point using automatic weapons. They had also planted IEDs to cause large scale damage to vehicles and personnel.
Nb Sub Tamang got seriously injured in the IED explosion along with three more personnel. He later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Nb Sub Suraj Tamang was a valiant and committed soldier who laid down his life in the service of the nation. He was given the gallantry award, “Sena Medal” for his gallantry, devotion to duty and supreme sacrifice.
Nb Sub Suraj Tamang is survived by his wife, Sanjila Tamang and Son Ayush Tamang.
