Naik Nikam Balu Shrirang hailed from Sangavi village in Koregaon tehsil of Satara district in Maharashtra. Naik Nikam Balu joined the Indian Army after completing his school education, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to serving the nation. He was enrolled into the 16 Maratha Light Infantry (16 MLI), a battalion of the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment—one of the oldest and most decorated infantry regiments of the Indian Army. Known for its gallant soldiers and storied history, the regiment embodies a tradition of exceptional courage, dedication, and sacrifice.

 

Naik Nikam Balu was deeply influenced by the regiment’s illustrious legacy, which inspired him to serve with steadfast devotion. Over the course of his service, he became a valued member of 16 MLI, known for his discipline, dedication, and exemplary courage in the face of adversity. In 1993, Naik Nikam Balu’s unit was deployed in Nagaland, a region significantly affected by insurgent activities. The battalion was tasked with maintaining peace and security in a challenging and volatile environment. 

 

Nagaland Operation: 20th Dec 1993

 

During 1993, Nk Nikam Balu's unit was deployed in Nagaland as part of "Operation Orchid" to counter the insurgency that had gripped the region. On December 20, 1993, Naik Nikam Balu was part of a convoy traveling on the strategic Mokokchung-Mariani Road, a route known for insurgent activity. On the morning of December 20, 1993, at approximately 8:40 a.m., the convoy came under a well-coordinated ambush by a large group of insurgents armed with sophisticated weapons. Despite the heavy enemy fire, Naik Nikam Balu displayed outstanding courage and determination. He fought valiantly alongside his comrades, putting his life on the line to protect his fellow soldiers and uphold the mission. The ambush was intense, with the enemy using automatic weapons and other advanced armaments. In the ensuing firefight, Naik Nikam Balu sustained severe injuries but continued to fight until his last breath.

 

Naik Nikam Balu was among the 14 brave soldiers, including the commanding officer, Col N Jayachandran Nair, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the ambush. The other brave hearts include Nb Sub Bhosale MS,  L/Nk Chougule JR, L/Nk AG Jadhav, Sep Ramesh S Kakade, Sep Pabale Nitin M, Sep Jadhav Gorakh N, Sep Patil Mahadev R, Sep Kulkarni NP, Sep Surender, Sep Patil Subhash S, and Sep Deepak Galande. His actions that day epitomized the highest ideals of service, bravery, and selflessness, leaving behind an enduring legacy of valor and dedication. Naik Nikam Balu’s sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience of the Indian Army’s soldiers who face immense challenges to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
