Naib Subedar Duraisamy Stanislass hailed from Valavanur in Viluppuram district of Tamil Nadu. From an early age, he displayed a keen sense of discipline and dedication, which eventually led him to pursue a career in the Indian Army. After completing his initial education, he joined the armed forces and was recruited into the 17 Engineer Regiment of the Corps of Engineers, one of the oldest and most distinguished arms of the Indian Army. The Corps of Engineers plays a crucial role in military operations and is responsible for various engineering tasks essential for both combat and peacetime activities. It consists of four major components: Combat Engineers, Military Engineering Services (MES), Border Roads Organization, and Military Survey.
As a part of this esteemed regiment, Naib Subedar Duraisamy Stanislaus was involved in critical infrastructure development, combat engineering support, and various operational assignments that strengthened the nation's defence capabilities. After dedicating several years to military service, Naib Subedar Duraisamy Stanislaus got married to Ms Siraya Pushpam. By 1994, his unwavering commitment and exemplary service had earned him a well-deserved promotion to the rank of Naib Subedar, reflecting his dedication, and invaluable contributions to the Indian Army.
Ammunition Explosion-(Srinagar): 29 Mar 1994
In 1994, Naib Subedar Duraisamy Stanislass was serving with the 17 Engineer Regiment, a unit deployed in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, as part of its operational duties. Known for his dedication, discipline, and unwavering commitment to duty, he was stationed at the Badami Bagh Cantonment, one of the most strategic military installations in the region. On March 29, 1994, a high-level team of officers was conducting an inspection of arms and ammunition that had been seized from militants. Among them was Colonel ET Mathew, who was leading the inspection at the cantonment. During the inspection, a sudden and massive explosion rocked the area, triggering a devastating fire. The blast was powerful enough to cause significant casualties and widespread destruction. Maj Gen EW Fernandes, who was attending a meeting in a nearby building, lost his life in the explosion.
Naib Subedar Duraisamy Stanislass was among those critically injured in the blast. Despite all possible efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries, laying down his life in the line of duty. Alongside him, several senior officers and soldiers also made the supreme sacrifice, including, Colonel ET Mathew, Lieutenant Colonel K Krishnamoorthy, Captain Subhash Soraisom Chandra Singh, Subedar Hoshiar Singh Jangra, Subedar Kundalik Chavan, and Rifleman AB Rashid Khan. Nb Sub D Stanislass's sacrifice was a testament to the courage, valour, and unwavering spirit of the Indian Army personnel who serve under the most challenging circumstances. As a soldier of the 17 Engineer Regiment, Naib Subedar Stanislass played a crucial role in ensuring the operational readiness of his unit in Srinagar. His dedication to service and his ultimate sacrifice will always be remembered as a symbol of bravery and selflessness.
Naib Subedar Duraisamy Stanislass is survived by his wife Smt Siraya Pushpam.
