Operation Rakshak: 30 Aug 2010
In August 2010, Naib Subedar Mohinder Kumar and his unit troops were deployed in Bandipora district of Jammu & Kashmir, along the highly volatile Line of Control (LoC). The region was fraught with danger, as ceasefire violations by enemy forces were frequent and often unpredictable. The LoC was also a hotspot for terrorist infiltration, facilitated by the Pakistani security forces. Terrorist groups frequently attempted to infiltrate under the cover of artillery fire or with assistance from the Border Action Team (BAT)—a specialized unit of enemy forces trained for cross-border strikes. On 30 August 2010, intelligence reports indicated the presence of heavily armed terrorists in Bandipora district. In response, the security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Viji Nar area in Bandipora district to neutralize the threat. Nb Sub Mohinder Kumar was an integral part of the assault team assigned to execute this high-risk mission. Following a well-coordinated plan, the team swiftly mobilized and reached the suspected location. As soon as they approached the target area, they established contact with the militants. However, the insurgents, unwilling to surrender, immediately opened heavy fire on the advancing troops. A fierce and prolonged gun battle ensued in the rugged and dense terrain.
Undeterred by the hail of bullets, Nb Sub Mohinder Kumar displayed commendable courage and battlefield leadership. With unwavering determination, he advanced toward enemy positions, engaging in close combat with the terrorists. He pushed forward, ensuring that his comrades gained the tactical advantage. However, amid the intense exchange of gunfire, he was struck by a bullet in the head, sustaining severe injuries near his left ear. Despite being critically wounded, he continued to fight bravely, refusing to retreat until his body could no longer endure. Ultimately, he succumbed to his injuries during the operation. At the age of 44, Nb Sub Mohinder Kumar made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, upholding the highest traditions of valour and service.
Nb Sub Mohinder Kumar is survived by his wife Smt Kushum Devi.
