Nb Sub Vijay Kumar hailed from Bharatpur village of Farrukhabad district in Uttar Pradesh and was born on 19 Sep 1966. Son of Shri Rajendra Prasad and Smt Raj Rani, he was eldest among three brothers, and had Vinod Kumar and Vipin Kumar as his siblings. He was passionate about joining the armed forces since his early childhood and continued to follow his passion while growing up. Eventually, he joined the army on 05 Sep 1984 at the age of 18 years after completing his education. He was recruited into the Corps of Signals, considered to be the nervous system of the Indian Army that provides communication during peace as well as operations.
He developed into a dedicated soldier and soon learnt the professional skills of his trade. After completing a few years of service, he got married to Ms Darshana Kumari and the couple had two daughters Puja Kumari (born on 29 Sep 1988), Arti Kumari (born on 01 Jan 1991) and three sons Amit Kumar (born on 21 Nov 1993), Sumit Kumar (born on 30 Aug 1998), & Rishav Kumar (born on 17 Oct 2003). He was very affable and had a helping nature which endeared him to many people. By the year 2007, he had put in around 23 years of service and had served in various operational areas with challenging terrain and work conditions. By then he had evolved into a dependable Junior Commissioned Officer, who could handle diverse operational tasks.
Operation Rakshak(J&K) : 15 Sep 2007
During 2007, Nb Sub Vijay Kumar was serving with 14 WEU deployed in the Tangdhar sector of North Kashmir in Kupwara district along the LOC. His unit was a wireless experimental unit which was engaged in collecting the sensitive communication intelligence about the enemy activities. Nb Sub Vijay Kumar and his comrades manned posts in remote areas with rugged terrain and challenging weather conditions. The unit was operating as part of "Operation Rakshak" launched by the Indian Army in J&K to neutralize the threat of terrorism in Kashmir. Nb Sub Vijay Kumar was detailed for an operational task on 15 Sep 2007 along with a team of other soldiers.
However while performing the given operational task, Nb Sub Vijay Kumar got injured in an accident. He was rushed to 168 Military Hospital at Drugmulla in Kupwara district for medical treatment. But he later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Nb Sub Vijay Kumar was a disciplined and committed Junior Commissioned Officer, who laid down his life at the age of 41 years in the service of the nation.
Nb Sub Vijay Kumar is survived by his wife Smt Darshana Kumari, daughters Puja Kumari & Arti Kumari, and sons Amit Kumar, Sumit Kumar & Rishav Kumar.
