During Nov 2017, Rfn Jitendra Kumar’s unit 21 Raj Rif was deployed in the Kupwara district of J&K for counter-insurgency operations. The AOR (Area of Responsibility) of the unit fell in the region that was affected by militants activities and therefore the unit had to maintain a very high state of alert at all times. The area was also prone to infiltration by militants from across the border and the unit troops were involved in counter-infiltration operations on a regular basis. One such counter-infiltration operation was undertaken by the unit on 21st Nov 2017. The unit had received information from the intelligence sources about the possible infiltration attempt in Zarhama area of Kupwara district. Based on this information the unit launched an operation on 21st Nov 2017 to foil the infiltration attempt. Rfn Jitendra Kumar was part of the team that was assigned to undertake this operation.
As planed Rfn Jitendra Kumar and his teammates reached the suspected area in the general area of Watnar Gali and launched the operation. Soon the troops detected suspicious movement and confronted the infiltrators. The militants resorted to firing on being challenged and a fierce gun battle followed thereafter. However, during the exchange of fire, Rfn Jitendra Kumar received multiple gunshots and was seriously injured. He later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Rfn Jitendra Kumar was a valiant and dedicated soldier who laid down his life at the age of 23 years in the service of the nation.
