In May 1999, following a grueling tenure in the icy heights of Siachen, Rifleman Nazir Ahmed Khan’s unit—the 12th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (12 JAK LI)—was redeployed to the Batalik sector in Kargil, one of the most critical fronts during the Kargil War. The battalion was assigned a vital and high-risk mission: to recapture Point 5203, a strategically important peak located at an altitude of 17,000 feet in the Kargil-Yaldor area. The success of this mission was crucial for regaining control over the Batalik sector, a key objective in the broader campaign. On June 7, 1999, a specialized assault team led by Captain Amol Kalia, a highly skilled mountaineer, was formed to undertake this dangerous task. The team consisted of many brave soldiers, including Rifleman Nazir Ahmed Khan. They were airlifted into the conflict zone under perilous conditions, with the entire area under constant threat from hostile artillery and small arms fire. Despite these challenges, the team advanced with unwavering resolve, employing advanced mountaineering techniques to scale the steep and rugged terrain, navigating both natural obstacles and fortified enemy defenses.
In the early hours of June 9, 1999, at approximately 3:00 a.m., the assault team launched a daring attack under the cover of darkness. The enemy had entrenched themselves deeply into the mountain, bolstered by formidable fortifications and strategic advantage. The approach was treacherous, and the soldiers faced unrelenting resistance. Nevertheless, Rifleman Nazir Ahmed Khan and his comrades displayed unmatched courage and determination, successfully establishing a foothold on the northwestern slopes of Point 5203. The operation was brutal and costly—Captain Amol Kalia and nine other soldiers laid down their lives in this fierce engagement, marking one of the most significant losses for the Indian Army during the Kargil conflict. Though the position was eventually secured, Rifleman Nazir Ahmed Khan, who had sustained severe injuries during the operation, succumbed to his wounds on June 15, 1999. His sacrifice, along with that of his comrades, played a pivotal role in recapturing a key strategic post. The victory at Point 5203 was a major turning point in the Batalik sector and significantly contributed to the overall success of Operation Vijay. Rifleman Nazir Ahmed Khan was a gallant and devoted soldier who laid down his life in the line of his duty.
Rifleman Nazir Ahmed Khan is survived by his wife Smt Saima Nazir.
