Operation Rakshak (J&K): 14 Sep 1996

In September 1996, Rifleman Rajendra Singh was serving with the 9th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles (9 Garh Rif), which was deployed in an operationally sensitive area marked by frequent militant activity and repeated infiltration attempts across the Line of Control. The region was characterized by difficult terrain, dense cover, and an unpredictable security environment, making military operations highly demanding. Soldiers stationed there had to maintain constant vigilance, exceptional endurance, and remarkable composure, as the threat of sudden hostile engagement remained ever-present. Operating under such challenging conditions required not only physical toughness but also mental resilience and unwavering discipline. Rifleman Rajendra Singh, known for his dedication and steadfast commitment to duty, continued to serve with courage and determination alongside his fellow soldiers, safeguarding the area against hostile threats. On 14 September 1996, the unit received credible intelligence inputs indicating the presence of armed militants within its Area of Responsibility (AOR). Recognizing the seriousness of the threat and the potential danger to security in the region, the commanding officers quickly assessed the situation and decided to launch a search-and-destroy operation to locate and neutralize the infiltrators before they could cause harm.

Rifleman Rajendra Singh, along with his comrades, was part of the team tasked with executing the mission. Moving swiftly and strategically, the soldiers advanced toward the suspected location and established a cordon around the area to prevent the militants from escaping. As the troops carefully closed in, they detected suspicious movement, confirming the presence of hostile elements. Upon being challenged by the security forces, the militants opened heavy fire, triggering a fierce and prolonged gun battle. The encounter rapidly intensified into a close and dangerous firefight that lasted for several hours. Despite hostile fire and the challenging battlefield conditions, the soldiers of 9 Garh Rif fought with immense bravery, determination, and tactical discipline. During this intense exchange of gunfire, Rifleman Rajendra Singh was struck by multiple enemy bullets. However, even after sustaining grievous injuries, he displayed extraordinary courage and an unyielding fighting spirit. Refusing to give in despite severe wounds, he continued to engage the enemy and remained committed to his duty alongside his comrades. Fighting valiantly until his last breath, Rifleman Rajendra Singh eventually succumbed to his injuries on the battlefield.
