Rifleman Ram Kumar Arya SM

Rifleman Ram Kumar Arya was a proud son of the Nainital district in Uttarakhand. From an early age, he was imbued with a profound sense of patriotism and a steadfast ambition to serve the country. Inspired by the gallant tales of Indian soldiers and fueled by an unwavering resolve, he set his sights on a career in the armed forces. His dedication bore fruit when he was inducted into the 7 Assam Rifles Battalion, part of the esteemed Assam Rifles—the oldest paramilitary force in India. Headquartered in Shillong, Meghalaya, the Assam Rifles plays a critical role in protecting the Indo-Myanmar border and executing key counter-insurgency operations across India’s northeastern frontiers.

Once enlisted, Rifleman Arya underwent intensive military training and soon became a vital member of the battalion, participating in numerous high-risk assignments in challenging environments. Over the years, he distinguished himself through his discipline, courage, and commitment to duty. Amid his service to the nation, he also embraced a new chapter in his personal life by marrying Ms. Hemlata, marking the beginning of a fulfilling journey beyond the uniform as well.

Operation Dudhi (J&K): 05 May 1991

In 1991, Rifleman Ram Kumar Arya was serving with the 7 Assam Rifles, which had been deployed in the militancy-hit region of Jammu and Kashmir. On May 5, 1991—during one of the most volatile phases of insurgency in the Valley—the Indian security forces launched Operation Dudhi, a bold counter-insurgency mission in the Chowkibal area of Kupwara district. The mission was spearheaded by Naib Subedar Padam Bahadur Chhetri, who led a 15-member assault team from 7 Assam Rifles, tasked with flushing out a heavily armed group of militants positioned near the strategically important Dudhi post. Among the soldiers chosen for this critical mission was Rifleman Ram Kumar Arya, who exhibited extraordinary bravery and an unwavering sense of responsibility. When ordered by his column commander, he sprang into action, engaging the militants who held fortified positions and superior firepower. Unfazed by the grave danger, he moved swiftly from cover to cover under heavy fire, maintaining relentless pressure on the enemy for more than three hours.

His courageous actions led to the neutralization of seven militants, significantly contributing to the success of the operation and preventing a major infiltration into Indian territory. Despite the fierce resistance, Rifleman Ram Kumar Arya stood his ground and made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. Operation Dudhi, though not widely known, stands as one of the most effective counter-insurgency operations in Indian history. The operation resulted in the elimination of 72 militants, the capture of 13 alive, and the recovery of 118 weapons, delivering a significant blow to cross-border militancy. The operation, however, came at a heavy cost, claiming the lives of two courageous soldiers—Rifleman Ram Kumar Arya and Rifleman Kameshwar Prasad—both of whom fought valiantly till their last breath. In recognition of his exceptional courage and selfless service, Rifleman Ram Kumar Arya was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal, honouring his gallantry and devotion to the motherland.

Rifleman Ram Kumar Arya is survived by his wife, Smt Hemlata Arya.
