Rifleman Sate Singh Rawat SM

Rifleman Sate Singh Rawat hailed from the village of Ginwala in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. He was born on 03 December 1965 to Shri Narayan Singh and Smt. Bachuli Devi. He grew up in a simple rural environment, rooted in the values of discipline, honesty, and service. He had one sibling, a sister named Jasdey. From a young age, he aspired to serve the nation in uniform. After completing his schooling, he followed his goal with determination and dedication. His resolve finally materialized when he joined the Indian Army on 01 June 1984 at the age of 18. He was enrolled into the 3 Garhwal Rifles, a battalion of the highly respected Garhwal Rifles Regiment, renowned for its valour, courage, and contributions in various operations since independence.

Over time, Rifleman Sate Singh Rawat grew into a disciplined and dependable soldier. He took pride in his uniform and carried out all assigned duties with professionalism and devotion. After a few years of service, he got married to Ms Deepa Devi, and the couple went on to build a loving family. They were blessed with five children—four daughters, Reena, Rekha, Leela, Neeta, and a son, Dinesh. By the year 1995, Rfn Sate Singh Rawat had completed around 11 years of service and had earned the respect of both his seniors and his comrades. His efficiency and commitment were reflected in his decorated service record. During his tenure, he participated in several important military operations, including Operation Rakshak (J&K), Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, and Operation Savage. His contributions to these missions demonstrated his courage and operational experience. In recognition of his dedicated service, he was awarded service honours, including the 12 Years Long Service Medal, the Videsh Seva Medal, along with campaign-specific participation honours.

Operation Rakshak (J&K): 25 Aug 1995

In August 1995, Rifleman Sate Singh Rawat was serving with the 36 Rashtriya Rifles, deployed in the Baramulla sector of Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir—an area known for frequent militant activity and infiltration attempts across the Line of Control. The demanding terrain and volatile environment required soldiers to operate with exceptional endurance, alertness, and composure, as the threat of hostile engagement was constant. Functioning under the operational control of XV Corps (Chinar Corps) headquartered in Srinagar, the battalion conducted a wide spectrum of counter-insurgency operations. These included independent missions, coordinated operations with other security agencies, area domination patrols, and intelligence-based strikes aimed at neutralizing militants and preventing infiltration. Life in this challenging Area of Responsibility meant that every patrol and operational movement came with the risk of ambushes, sudden gunfights, and unpredictable encounters. Despite these dangers, the troops of 36 Rashtriya Rifles continued to operate with unwavering resolve, playing a crucial role in maintaining security and stability in the Kashmir Valley.

On 25 August 1995, Rifleman Sate Singh Rawat’s unit received credible intelligence reports indicating the presence of militants in their 'Area of Responsibility (AOR)'. After assessing the situation, the unit made the decision to launch a search and destroy operation to neutralize the threat. Rifleman Rawat, along with his comrades, moved swiftly to cordon off the suspected area. As the troops approached, they identified hostile movement. Upon being challenged, the militants opened fire, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire. The encounter escalated rapidly and continued for several hours, testing the courage and resilience of the soldiers involved. During the intense firefight, Rifleman Sate Singh Rawat was struck by multiple enemy bullets—five of them hitting him in the chest. Despite being grievously wounded, he continued to fight with determination until he eventually succumbed to his injuries on the battlefield. Rifleman Sate Singh Rawat laid down his life at the age of 30 years in the line of duty, demonstrating commendable courage, unwavering dedication, and loyalty to the nation. In recognition of his gallantry and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the "Sena Medal", one of India’s prestigious military honours.

Rifleman Sate Singh Rawat is survived by his wife, Smt. Deepa Devi, daughters Ms Reena, Ms Rekha, Ms Leela, Ms Neeta, and his son Shri Dinesh Rawat.
