Sep Bhikale UB SM

Sepoy Bhikale Uttam Balu was born in 1984 in the Kolhapur district of Maharashtra, a region with a proud tradition of military service. After completing his schooling, he chose to serve the nation and joined the Indian Army in 2002 at the young age of 18. He was recruited into the 2nd Battalion of the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment, one of the oldest and most distinguished infantry regiments of the Indian Army, renowned for its valour, discipline, and numerous battle honours. From the outset of his military career, Sepoy Bhikale displayed a strong sense of duty and dedication. Upon successfully completing his rigorous training, he was deployed to various challenging operational areas. Over the years, he honed his combat skills and gained valuable field experience, steadily evolving into a dependable and capable soldier. His commitment to service, professional competence, and soldierly qualities earned him the respect of his peers and superiors alike.

Akhnoor Sector Operation (J&K): 18 May 2014

In May 2014, Sepoy Bhikale Uttam Balu was serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Maratha Light Infantry in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu & Kashmir—an area known for its high operational intensity. The unit’s Area of Responsibility (AOR) remained active with militant presence and was particularly vulnerable to infiltration attempts from across the Line of Control. To counter these threats, troops were regularly deployed on armed patrols and surveillance missions. On 18 May 2014, Sepoy Bhikale was part of one such patrol tasked with dominating the Nathua Tibba area. At approximately 1100 hours, as the patrol advanced through the rugged terrain, it was suddenly ambushed. The team came under a coordinated attack involving mines and intense small arms fire. The attackers were assessed to be part of a Border Action Team (BAT), typically comprising personnel from Pakistan’s Special Services Group along with well-trained terrorists. Such BAT attacks had been witnessed earlier as well, including incidents in 2013 in the Poonch sector.

Despite the element of surprise, Sepoy Bhikale and his comrades reacted swiftly and engaged the attackers with determination and courage. In the fierce exchange of fire that followed, Sepoy Bhikale was critically wounded after being hit by multiple bullets. Even as he fought alongside his team, he displayed exceptional grit and commitment to his duty. He later succumbed to his injuries, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. Sepoy Bhikale Uttam Balu’s bravery, devotion to duty, and unwavering resolve in the face of grave danger exemplified the highest traditions of the Indian Army. In recognition of his gallant actions and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal.

Sep Bhikale Uttam Balu is survived by his wife Smt Sugandha Bhikale and daughter Miss Shreya.
