Sepoy Gurtej Singh Gill KC

Sepoy Gurtej Singh Gill hailed from the Bathinda district of Punjab, a region renowned for its rich martial heritage and deep-rooted tradition of service in the armed forces. He was born to Shri Swaran Singh and Smt. Iqubal Kaur, who instilled in him, from an early age, the values of discipline, integrity, and an unwavering sense of duty towards the nation. Inspired by these ideals and driven by a strong desire to serve the country, he joined the Indian Army. Upon his enrolment, he became a part of the 15th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment—one of the oldest and most distinguished infantry regiments of the Indian Army. The Punjab Regiment has a long and illustrious history, marked by exceptional bravery, steadfastness, and numerous battle honours earned in both conventional wars and counter-insurgency operations. Being a member of such a celebrated regiment was a matter of immense pride for Sepoy Gurtej Singh Gill. Throughout his service, he upheld its traditions with dedication, professionalism, and an unflinching commitment to duty, embodying the finest qualities of a soldier.

Counter-Insuergency Operation (J&K): 31 Jan 1993

During 1993, Sepoy Gurtej Singh Gill was serving with the 15 Punjab battalion of the Indian Army, which was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir along the Line of Control. This region was highly volatile, marked by frequent ceasefire violations and persistent infiltration attempts from across the border. The Area of Responsibility (AOR) of the battalion comprised dense forests, rugged terrain, and treacherous mountain passes—conditions that were often exploited by infiltrating terrorists to evade detection. In such a challenging operational environment, the troops of 15 Punjab remained constantly engaged in counter-insurgency duties. These included regular patrolling, surveillance, and search-and-destroy missions aimed at neutralising threats. In addition to manning forward posts, the unit played a crucial role in preventing infiltration, maintaining a high state of alertness at all times.

On 31 January 1993, during a cordon and search operation in Duligund village, Sepoy Gurtej Singh Gill and his fellow soldiers came under heavy fire from terrorists hiding within the village. Demonstrating exceptional presence of mind and courage, Sepoy Gill reacted instantly. Unmindful of his personal safety, he charged into the hostile area and, after a brief but intense scuffle, successfully apprehended one of the terrorists. Based on the critical intelligence obtained from the captured militant, the troops advanced towards a nearby hideout. However, as they closed in, the terrorists opened heavy and sustained fire in an attempt to halt their advance. Undeterred by the grave danger, Sepoy Gurtej Singh Gill displayed remarkable bravery and determination. He boldly entered the hideout and launched a direct assault by lobbing grenades at the entrenched terrorists, effectively silencing their fire. His decisive action not only neutralised the immediate threat but also enabled his comrades to regain control of the situation and successfully complete the mission. Sepoy Gurtej Singh Gill’s conduct in the face of extreme danger reflected conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage, and exceptional devotion to duty. His fearless actions, which led to the capture of a terrorist and the destruction of a militant hideout, stand as a shining example of the highest traditions of the Indian Army. Sepoy Gurtej Singh Gill was given the nation’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, “Kirti Chakra” for his outstanding courage, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice.

Sepoy Gurtej Singh Gillis survived by his mother Smt Iqubal Kaur.
