Sepoy Jadhav Gorakh Nana hailed from Nimgaon Waghe village, located in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. Born into a humble and patriotic family, he grew up imbued with the values of service, discipline, and dedication to his nation. After completing his school education, he made the noble decision to join the Indian Army, a choice that reflected his unwavering commitment to protect and serve his motherland.

 

Sepoy Jadhav was inducted into the 16 Maratha Light Infantry (16 MLI), a distinguished battalion of the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment. The Maratha Light Infantry is one of the oldest and most decorated regiments of the Indian Army, known for its glorious history and the valiant spirit of its soldiers. The regiment has a long-standing legacy of courage and excellence, a tradition that Sepoy Jadhav proudly upheld through his exemplary service. In December 1993, Sepoy Jadhav Gorakh Nana's unit was deployed in Nagaland, a region grappling with insurgency and unrest.

 

Nagaland Operation: 20th Dec 1993

 

During 1993, Sep Jadhav Gorakh's unit was deployed in Nagaland as part of "Operation Orchid" to counter the insurgency that had gripped the region. On December 20, 1993, while on duty as part of a convoy moving along the critical Mokokchung-Mariani Road, his unit was ambushed by a large group of heavily armed insurgents. The attack, executed with sophisticated weaponry and precise planning, aimed to inflict maximum damage on the convoy. Despite being outnumbered and under intense fire, Sepoy Jadhav displayed remarkable bravery and determination in the face of overwhelming odds.

 

During the fierce exchange of fire, Sepoy Jadhav Gorakh Nana fought valiantly, embodying the highest traditions of courage and selflessness that define the Indian Army. In the line of duty, he sustained grievous injuries and made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down his life for the nation. The ambush claimed the lives of 13 other brave soldiers, including Col N Jayachandran Nair, Nb Sub Bhosale MS, Hav Shedge Laxman S, Nk Nikam Balu S, L/Nk Chougule JR, L/Nk AG Jadhav, Sep Ramesh S Kakade, Sep Pabale Nitin M, Sep Patil Mahadev R, Sep Kulkarni NP, Sep Surender, Sep Patil Subhash S, and Sep Deepak Galande. Their supreme sacrifice remains a testament to the valor and dedication of the Indian Army. Sepoy Jadhav Gorakh Nana displayed commendable courage and determination during the battle and laid down his life in the line of his duty.
