Sepoy Maruprolu Jaswanth Kumar Reddy hailed from Dariwada Kothapalem village in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. Son of Shri M Srinivasa Reddy and Smt Venkateswaramma, he had two younger brothers as his siblings. Sep Reddy always nursed the idea of joining the Army since his childhood and worked towards his dream from his younger days. His joy knew no bounds when he got selected in the Army after completing his initial education. In the year 2016, he was recruited to the 17 Madras of the famed Madras Regiment, a Regiment known for its intrepid soldiers and numerous battle exploits. By 2021, he had put in about five years of service in the Army.
Sunderbani Sector operation (J&K): 08 July 2021
During Jul 2021, Sep M Jaswanth Kumar Reddy's unit 17 Madras was deployed in the Sunderbani sector of J & K along the LOC. The unit troops were engaged in counter-insurgency operations on a regular basis as its AOR (Area of Operation) was affected by active militancy. The LOC remained highly active and volatile with ceasefire violations occurring very often and without any warning. Besides manning the forward posts in the Sunderbani sector of the Rajouri district, Sep Reddy's unit also undertook operations to check the infiltration bids as its AOR was prone to infiltration by the militants from across the border. One more such infiltration attempt was made on 08 Jul 2021 in the Rajouri district of J&K. Sep Reddy was part of team on that day that was made responsible to deal with the threat.
On July 8, 2021, at 0650hrs, Sep Reddy as Scout Number 2, while searching densely forested and rugged terrain, observed the movement of terrorist activity and immediately engaged with them. In the ensuing gun battle, Sep Reddy brought effective fire and blocked the most likely escape route of the terrorists. Displaying commendable courage he eliminated one terrorist in a face-to-face gunfight. While he was crawling forward to engage other terrorists, he saw his 'Team Commander' severely injured having faced enemy fire. He immediately lobbed grenades to pin down the terrorists and swiftly crawled towards his Team Commander to pull him to safety. While doing so, he sustained multiple injuries and started bleeding profusely. Undeterred, Sep Reddy continued to engage with the terrorists and pulled his 'Team Commander' under cover before succumbing to his injuries. Sep Reddy was a gallant and dedicated soldier, who laid down his life in the line of his duty. Sep MJK Reddy was given the gallantry award, “Shaurya Chakra” posthumously on 26 Jan 2022, for his commendable bravery, devotion to duty, camaraderie and supreme sacrifice.
Sep Maruprolu Jaswanth Kumar Reddy is survived by his father Shri M Srinivasa Reddy, mother Smt Venkateswaramma and two younger brothers.
