Sepoy Patil Subhash Shamrao hailed from Pishavi village in Shahuwadi tehsil of Kolhapur district, in Maharashtra. Inspired by a deep sense of patriotism and a desire to serve the nation, he joined the Indian Army after completing his schooling. He was inducted into the 16 Maratha Light Infantry (16 MLI), a battalion of the esteemed Maratha Light Infantry Regiment. With a history that traces back to the 18th century, the Maratha Light Infantry is one of the Indian Army's oldest and most distinguished regiments, known for its motto “Duty, Honour, Courage” and its soldiers’ legendary fighting spirit. Over the decades, the regiment has participated in numerous pivotal campaigns and military operations, earning widespread respect and an enduring legacy of valour. Sepoy Patil Subhash embodied these ideals, upholding the regiment's proud tradition throughout his service.

 

By 1993, Sepoy Patil Subhash had distinguished himself as a committed and skilled soldier, admired for his professionalism and unwavering dedication. That year, his battalion, 16 MLI, was deployed in Nagaland, a region plagued by insurgency and unrest. The northeastern states of India faced immense challenges due to armed insurgent groups, necessitating a strong military presence to restore stability and protect the local population. Entrusted with the critical mission of maintaining peace and combating insurgency in the area, Sepoy Patil Subhash and his comrades demonstrated commendable courage and resolve, playing a vital role in upholding law and order in the conflict-affected region.

 

Nagaland Operation: 20th Dec 1993

 

In 1993, Sepoy Patil Subhash’s unit, the 16 Maratha Light Infantry, was deployed in Nagaland as part of "Operation Orchid," a counter-insurgency mission aimed at restoring peace in the region. On December 20, 1993, Sepoy Patil Subhash was part of a convoy led by Colonel N Jayachandran Nair traveling along the strategic Mokokchung-Mariani Road, a vital route in Nagaland. The convoy was ambushed by a group of approximately 100 insurgents armed with advanced automatic weapons, who executed a meticulously planned attack.

 

Under a relentless barrage of heavy gunfire, Sepoy Patil Subhash displayed extraordinary courage and resolve, and fought valiantly, embodying the highest traditions of courage and selflessness that define the Indian Army. In the line of duty, he sustained grievous injuries and made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down his life for the nation The ambush claimed the lives of 13 other brave soldiers, including Col N Jayachandran Nair, Nb Sub Bhosale, Hav Shedge Laxman S, Nk Nikam Balu S, L/Nk Chougule JR, L/Nk AG Jadhav, Sep Ramesh S Kakade, Sep Pabale Nitin M, Sep Jadhav Gorakh N, Sep Patil Mahadev R, Sep Kulkarni NP, Sep Surender and Sep Deepak Galande. Their supreme sacrifice remains a testament to the valor and dedication of the Indian Army. Sep Patil Subhash displayed remarkable courage and determination during the battle and laid down his life in the line of his duty.

 

Sep Patil Subhash Shamrao is survived by his mother Smt Sakubai.
