Operation Orchid : 28 March 1989
During March 1989, Sepoy Sita Ram's unit the 2nd Jat Battalion was deployed in Nagaland for counter-insurgency operations. The unit was part of "Operation Orchid," undertaken by the Army in the Nagaland-Manipur-Arunachal Pradesh area. As militancy was active in the unit's area of operation (AOR), the troops maintained a high state of alert and frequently engaged in operations against militants. Since militants often targeted road convoys, sanitizing designated routes with armed patrols was a standard operating procedure. Sepoy Sita Ram was part of one such patrol on March 28, 1989.
As Sepoy Sita Ram and his comrades reached an area known for militant activity, they were ambushed by hidden militants. The heavily armed militants launched a pre-planned attack. Despite the surprise attack, Sepoy Sita Ram and his comrades reacted swiftly and engaged in a fierce gunfight with a heavy exchange of fire. Sepoy Sita Ram fought valiantly but sustained severe injuries in the attack. He later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Sepoy Sita Ram was a valiant and committed soldier who laid down his life at the age of 20 years in service to the nation.
