Sangan Basavamma he was the eldest of three siblings and carried early in life the quiet responsibility that often comes with being the firstborn. Raised in the humble surroundings of Wadawadagi village, he completed his schooling locally, growing up with the values of discipline, simplicity, and hard work that defined rural life in Karnataka. He later pursued higher education and graduated from Bijapur—an achievement that made his family proud and strengthened his aspiration to serve the nation.
Motivated by a sense of duty beyond personal aspirations, Sepoy Basavantray joined the Indian Army in 1992. He was inducted into the 11 Maratha Light Infantry of the prestigious Maratha Light Infantry Regiment, one of India’s oldest and highly decorated infantry units known for its unmatched courage, loyalty, and battlefield resilience. During his service, he earned a reputation for dedication, reliability, and professionalism—hallmarks of an exemplary soldier. As counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir intensified, Sep Basavantray was later deputed to serve with the 17 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), a unit specifically raised for high-risk counter-terrorism duties in the region. Operating in one of the most volatile and challenging security environments in the country, he displayed quiet courage and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation and its people.
Poonch Operation (J&K):14 Jul 2000
In the year 2000, Sepoy Basavantray Lingadalli was serving with the 17 Rashtriya Rifles, deployed in the Poonch sector of Jammu & Kashmir. The unit operated in a highly sensitive area plagued by active militancy, where soldiers were engaged in regular counter-insurgency operations. Although the Kargil conflict was unfolding during this period, militancy in the region had not diminished, making the environment tense and unpredictable. The troops of 17 RR remained on continuous high alert, prepared to respond to enemy movements at any moment. On 14 July 2000, the unit received credible intelligence about the presence of armed militants hiding within their Area of Responsibility. Acting swiftly, the troops launched a well-planned cordon and search operation to isolate and neutralize the threat. Sepoy Basavantray was part of the team tasked with executing the mission—an assignment that demanded courage, vigilance, and composure under pressure.
As the troops closed in and issued a challenge, the militants opened fire, triggering a fierce and prolonged exchange. Amid the intense gun battle, Sepoy Basavantray displayed remarkable determination and steadfastness, holding his position and continuing to engage the enemy despite the danger. During the heavy exchange of fire, he sustained severe injuries. He was evacuated and shifted to a military medical facility, but despite the best efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his wounds. At just 28 years of age, Sepoy Basavantray Lingadalli laid down his life in the service of the nation. Though his life was brief, it carried the weight of honour and dedication.
Sepoy Basavantray Lingadalli is survived by his daughter, Smt. Sharada.
