Though the Indo-Pak war officially commenced on 03 Dec 1971, when the Pakistani Air Force attacked 11 Indian Air Fields, the border skirmishes had started months before that when the refugees from across the border in the North-East had started pouring in as a result of atrocities committed by the Pakistani forces. Prior to the outbreak of open hostilities, 2 Jat battalion had been engaged in a number of border operations to strengthen army defences and protect the Fazilka town.
On the 01st of Nov, 1971, the Pakistani army started heavy mortar shelling on Indian Army Posts in Fazilka sector. Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing using small arms and mortar shells. Sepoy Charan Singh and his comrades retaliated strongly and effectively, to the unprovoked firing and the exchange of fire continued for several hours. However during the heavy exchange of fire, Sepoy Charan Singh got hit by enemy shell and was severely injured. Sepoy Charan Singh soon succumbed to his injuries and was martyred.
