Indo Pak War: 10 Dec 1971

During a critical phase of the Indo-Pak War of 1971, Sepoy Fateh Singh was serving with the 17 Kumaon Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment, deployed in a forward sector along the Line of Control. The area of operations was extremely challenging, characterized by steep ridgelines, dense vegetation, and harsh weather conditions that severely restricted movement, visibility, and communication. In this tense and uncertain environment, his unit was assigned the vital task of holding a strategically significant post that dominated a known infiltration route frequently exploited by enemy forces. Intelligence inputs had already indicated heightened enemy activity in the sector, pointing towards a likely attempt to penetrate Indian defenses under the cover of darkness. On the night of 10 December 1971, taking advantage of poor visibility, the enemy launched a sudden and well-coordinated assault on the forward position. The attack commenced with intense small-arms fire, supported by intermittent shelling, aimed at disorienting the defenders and breaking their defensive cohesion. Despite the ferocity of the assault, Sepoy Fateh Singh and his fellow soldiers stood firm, displaying remarkable composure and determination under fire.

Amid the chaos of battle, Sepoy Fateh Singh exhibited exceptional courage and presence of mind. Holding his ground under sustained enemy fire, he continued to engage the advancing adversary effectively, playing a crucial role in stabilizing the defensive line at a moment when the situation was rapidly escalating. His resolute actions ensured that the enemy’s momentum was checked and the integrity of the position was maintained. As the engagement intensified, he went beyond the call of duty by assisting in the evacuation of wounded comrades, all while maintaining active participation in the firefight. His selflessness and unwavering commitment to both his mission and his fellow soldiers reflected the highest traditions of the Indian Army. The determined resistance put up by the unit ultimately forced the enemy to withdraw, foiling their attempt to capture the post. The successful defense of this key position not only secured the sector but also underscored the indomitable spirit and fighting prowess of the Kumaon Regiment. Sepoy Fateh Singh’s gallant conduct during the operation remains a testament to his bravery, dedication to duty, and unflinching devotion to the nation.

Sepoy Fateh Singh is survived by his wife Smt Sumati Devi.
