Sepoy Pyare Lal

Sepoy Pyare Lal hailed from Tumbahari village in Rohtak district, Haryana—a region known for its proud martial traditions and deep-rooted patriotism. Driven by a strong sense of duty to the nation, he joined the 13 Kumaon Battalion of the renowned Kumaon Regiment, one of the Indian Army’s oldest and most decorated infantry units, with a legacy of courage dating back to the 18th century.

Throughout his service, Sepoy Pyare Lal exemplified discipline, dedication, and selfless devotion to duty. He wore the Kumaon uniform with pride, upholding its glorious traditions and spirit of valour. By 1962, his battalion was stationed at Ambala, and soon after, it was mobilized to Jammu & Kashmir, reflecting the unit’s crucial role in defending the nation during a time of heightened tension.

Battle of Rezang La (Indo-China War): 18 Nov 1962

In June 1962, Sepoy Pyare Lal’s unit, the 13 Kumaon Battalion, under Lt Col H.S. Dhingra, was moved from Ambala to Baramulla, Jammu & Kashmir. As tensions with China escalated, the battalion was soon directed to Leh in September and placed under the 114 Infantry Brigade, commanded by Brig T.N. Raina (later Chief of Army Staff). Tasked with defending a 400 km stretch of the Indo-China border, the brigade included several elite units—among them, the 13 Kumaon, whose ‘C’ Company, led by Maj Shaitan Singh, was assigned to hold Rezang La, a vital mountain pass guarding the approach to Chushul airfield.

By late October, ‘C’ Company had fortified its positions in anticipation of a Chinese offensive. On 18 November 1962, the Chinese launched a massive assault on Rezang La, coinciding with attacks in the NEFA region. Wave after wave of enemy soldiers advanced under heavy artillery and mortar fire. Despite being vastly outnumbered and cut off from support, the men of ‘C’ Company—commanded by Maj Shaitan Singh—stood their ground with unmatched courage. Sepoy Pyare Lal, serving alongside his comrades in freezing temperatures and fierce combat, fought valiantly until he was fatally wounded. He made the supreme sacrifice, upholding the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

The Battle of Rezang La remains one of the most heroic stands in India’s military history. Of the 124 soldiers defending the post, 114 laid down their lives—but their bravery delayed the enemy advance and safeguarded Chushul. Months later, when the snow melted, the bodies of the fallen, including Sepoy Pyare Lal, were found still clutching their weapons—silent sentinels of courage and sacrifice.

Sepoy Pyare Lal is survived by his wife, Smt Ram Kali.
