Son of Shri Hari Singh Shekhawat and Smt Durga Kanwar, Sep Shravan Singh joined the army after completing his initial studies on 30 Apr 1995 at the age of 19 years. He was recruited into the famed Rajput Regiment, a regiment known for its fearless soldiers and numerous battle exploits.
Sep SS Shekhawat got married to Ms Parvati on 17 Apr 1998. By 1999, Sep SS Shekhawat had served for almost 4 years and had served in various operational areas with challenging terrain and work environments. After serving for a few years with his parent unit he was later deputed to 10 Rashtriya Rifles deployed for counter-insurgency operations in J & K.
Doda Operation: 04 May 1999
During May 1999, Sep SS Shekhawat's unit 10 RR was deployed in the Doda district of J&K as part of the Counter Insurgency Force (Delta Force) functioning under the operation control of XVI Corps. It was engaged in operations against the militants frequently in its AOR(Area of Responsibility). As its AOR was prone to infiltration by the militants, the unit troops had to maintain a high state of alert at all times. The unit undertook operations regularly in its AOR to check the infiltration and one such operation was assigned to the unit on 04 May 1999. Sep SS Shekhawat was made part of the team that was tasked to undertake that operation. Sep SS Shekhawat along with his team quickly assessed the situation and made out an operation to nab them. He then along with his troops swung into action and cordoned off the suspected area of the village in Doda district.
Sep SS Shekhawat and his team soon spotted the militants, who started firing at them upon being challenged. A fierce gun battle followed thereafter with a heavy exchange of fire. Sep SS Shekhawat along with his comrades kept tightening the cordon to prevent any attempt by the militants to escape. However, Sep SS Shekhawat got injured in the exchange of fire. He later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Sep SS Shekhawat was a gallant and committed soldier, who laid down his life at the age of 23 years in the line of his duty. Sep SS Shekhawat was given the gallantry award, “Sena Medal” on 26 Jan 2000 for his exceptional courage, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice.
Sepoy Shravan Singh Shekhawat is survived by his wife Smt Parvati Kanwar.
