Sqn Ldr Abhinav Chaudhary hailed from Pusar village in the Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh. He was the son of Shri Satyendra Chaudhary and Smt. Satya Chaudhary, and shared a close bond with his sister, Mudrika. From a young age, he nurtured a strong aspiration to serve in the armed forces—an ambition that only grew stronger with time. After completing his early schooling in Meerut, he earned selection to the prestigious Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun. His time at RIMC played a crucial role in shaping his character and laying a solid foundation for his future military career. Building on this, he went on to clear the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination and joined the NDA in 2010. As part of the 124th Course, he was inducted into ‘R’ Squadron, where he actively participated and excelled in various academic, physical, and extracurricular activities. He successfully passed out from NDA in 2013. Following his training at NDA, he joined the Air Force Academy (AFA) and was commissioned into the Indian Air Force in the fighter stream in 2014. He underwent rigorous multi-phase flying training and qualified as a fighter pilot. Upon completion of his training, he was posted to the Air Force Station at Pathankot, where he joined a frontline fighter squadron operating the MiG-21 Bison aircraft.
Over the years, Sqn Ldr Abhinav Chaudhary honed his skills and gained valuable operational experience, evolving into a highly competent and professional fighter pilot. On 25 December 2019, he married Ms. Sonika Ujjaval. By 2021, he had completed around seven years of distinguished service and had been promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader. By then, he had established himself as a skilled aviator with considerable experience in diverse air operations, reflecting his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to duty.
MiG-21 Aircraft Crash: 21 May 2021
During May 2021, Sqn Ldr Abhinav Chaudhary was serving with No. 23 Squadron of the Indian Air Force, famously known as the “Panthers,” based at Air Force Station Suratgarh in Rajasthan. The squadron has a rich legacy, having been raised at Pune in 1956 with de Havilland Vampire aircraft under the command of Sqn Ldr Kanwar Singh. Over the years, it transitioned to the Gnat aircraft in the 1960s and was later equipped with the MiG-21 Bison, continuing its role as a frontline fighter squadron. Even during peacetime, rigorous training remains a cornerstone of the Indian Air Force’s operational preparedness. Pilots routinely undertake complex training sorties that simulate real combat scenarios, ensuring they remain ready to respond effectively to any eventuality. Sqn Ldr Abhinav Chaudhary, a dedicated and highly skilled fighter pilot, regularly participated in such demanding training missions to sharpen his operational capabilities. On 20 May 2021, Sqn Ldr Abhinav Chaudhary undertook a scheduled night training sortie from Air Force Station Suratgarh. Shortly after take-off, his aircraft developed a serious technical malfunction, leaving him with no option but to eject. Before ejecting, it is believed that he displayed exceptional presence of mind and flying skill, attempting to steer the aircraft away from populated areas to minimize potential loss of life and property.
The aircraft was observed circling over agricultural fields near Langeana village in Moga district of Punjab before eventually crashing at around 0100 hours on 21 May 2021. Sqn Ldr Abhinav Chaudhary successfully ejected and his parachute was found deployed, with an SOS signal transmitted to the Indian Air Force. Despite his efforts to land safely, he sustained severe injuries—reportedly to his neck and spinal cord—and succumbed to them. After an extensive search operation lasting nearly four hours, his mortal remains were located approximately 2 kilometers from the crash site. His final moments reflected not only his courage but also his unwavering commitment to safeguarding civilian lives, even in the face of grave danger. Sqn Ldr Abhinav Chaudhary was a consummate professional, a committed soldier, and a gallant air warrior. His supreme sacrifice in the line of duty stands as a testament to his bravery, dedication, and service to the nation. He will always be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
Sqn Ldr Abhinav Chaudhary is survived by his by his father Shri Satyendra Chaudhary, mother Smt Satya Chaudhary, wife Smt Sonika Ujjaval and sister Mudrika.

2021 at 10:14 amFreedom Fighters fought for the freedom of the country. Because of them, we are celebrating Independence Day. They are revolutionary and some of them use non-violence as the weapon against the Britishers. India got independence on 15th August 1947 due to the struggle of our freedom fighters to make it independent. They devoted everything to the progress of their nation.
