Operational Flying Task: 23 May 2017
On 23 May 2017, at around 10:30 AM, Squadron Leader D. Pankaj, along with Flight Lieutenant Achudev, took off from Air Force Station Tezpur in a Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft. The sortie was part of an operational training mission, wherein the pilots were required to carry out a series of complex flying maneuvers and procedures in a two-aircraft formation—an essential aspect of maintaining combat readiness in the Indian Air Force. At approximately 11:10 AM, while flying over the Doulasang area of Arunachal Pradesh, close to the India–China border, the aircraft lost contact with radar. The sudden disappearance of the aircraft triggered immediate concern, and a large-scale search and rescue operation was launched involving the Indian Air Force, the Army, and local civil authorities. After several days of extensive efforts, the wreckage of the aircraft was located on 26 May 2017 during an aerial reconnaissance mission. It was found deep within dense forest terrain, nearly 60 kilometers from Tezpur, making access and recovery operations extremely challenging. Initial search teams recovered a few personal effects from the crash site, including a blood-stained shoe, a partially burnt PAN card, and the wallet of one of the pilots. Subsequently, the aircraft’s Flight Data Recorder (black box) was also retrieved, providing crucial information about the final moments of the flight.
Analysis of the recovered data and site evidence indicated that Squadron Leader D. Pankaj was unable to eject before the crash. Tragically, he succumbed to the impact, leading to the loss of a highly skilled and professionally competent fighter pilot. His untimely demise was a profound loss not only to the Indian Air Force but also to the nation he served with unwavering dedication. Squadron Leader D. Pankaj was a valiant air warrior and a committed soldier who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. His courage, professionalism, and devotion to service embody the highest traditions of the Indian Air Force. He will always be remembered with deep respect and gratitude for his service to the nation.
