Poonch Operation (J&K): 18 Apr 1999

During 1999, Subedar Saleem Khan was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir along with his battalion as part of counter-terrorism operations. The region was known for its volatile security situation, and the soldiers of the 24 Rajput Regiment were tasked with maintaining stability and countering insurgent threats. Their mission involved patrolling hostile terrain, intercepting infiltration attempts, and engaging in combat with militant groups that frequently targeted the region. On April 18, 1999, the battalion received credible intelligence about terrorist infiltration in the Poonch sector, a region notorious for heightened militant activity. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the commanding officer organized a swift and coordinated response. A team of soldiers from the 24 Rajput Battalion, including Subedar Saleem Khan and Sepoy Kamal Naimuddin Qazi, was dispatched to the area to conduct a search-and-destroy mission. The mission presented significant challenges, with the soldiers navigating rugged and treacherous terrain while maintaining heightened vigilance for potential threats. As they closed in on the suspected infiltration site, the troops suddenly came under heavy fire from militants who had fortified their positions in the area. A fierce gun battle ensued, with both sides exchanging intense volleys of gunfire. Amidst the intense combat, Subedar Saleem Khan and Sepoy Kamal Naimuddin Qazi displayed exceptional bravery and determination.

Despite being outnumbered and facing sustained enemy fire, they advanced courageously, engaging the militants at close range to neutralize the threat. Their unwavering resolve inspired their comrades, who pressed on with the operation under their leadership. During the intense exchange of fire, both Subedar Saleem Khan and Sepoy Kamal Naimuddin Qazi sustained critical injuries. Despite their injuries, they continued to fight valiantly, ensuring that their unit maintained control of the situation. Tragically, both soldiers succumbed to their wounds, making the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The courageous actions of Subedar Saleem Khan and Sepoy Kamal Naimuddin Qazi played a crucial role in the successful completion of the operation. Their sacrifice continues to inspire future generations of soldiers and stands as a symbol of heroism in the proud history of the 24 Rajput Regiment.
