Operation Parakram: 03 Mar 2002

March 2002 was a turbulent time in Jammu and Kashmir, a region already engulfed in the throes of insurgency and cross-border terrorism. The escalating violence posed an ever-present threat to peace, with an alarming surge in infiltrations across the Line of Control (LoC). The fragile stability of the region hung in the balance, demanding swift and resolute action from the Indian Army. Amid this volatile backdrop, Sub Surinder Singh of the 3rd Battalion, Sikh Regiment, emerged as a beacon of courage and sacrifice. Early that month, intelligence agencies intercepted critical information about a heavily armed terrorist group operating in the dense forests of the Rajouri sector, perilously close to the LoC. Suspected of planning a major strike, this group posed a severe threat to civilian lives and military installations in the area. A counter-insurgency operation was swiftly devised to neutralize the threat, with Subedar Singh’s unit assigned the formidable task of leading the charge.

The operation commenced on 03 March 2002, when Sub Surinder Singh’s unit detected the movement of infiltrators attempting to cross the LoC under the cover of dense forest. Displaying exceptional resolve, Subedar Singh engaged the terrorists in a fierce firefight, managing to eliminate one of them at close range. His precise and swift action forced the remaining militants to disperse into the jungle. Understanding the urgency of the mission, Subedar Singh took command, rallying his team to pursue the fleeing terrorists. As they advanced through the forest, the unit came under sudden, intense fire from the militants, who had regrouped and fortified their positions. Sub Surinder Singh, despite sustaining gunshot wounds, pressed on undeterred. Crawling to a vantage point behind a boulder, he engaged the enemy head-on, killing another terrorist in close combat even as he endured immense physical pain.

The battle intensified when one of the terrorists took refuge in a nearby house, using it as a stronghold to launch further attacks. Undeterred by the danger, Subedar Singh climbed onto the roof of the structure, braving relentless enemy fire. From this perilous position, he lobbed grenades into the building, neutralizing the hidden threat. In the ensuing chaos, the terrorist hurled a grenade at Sub Surinder Singh, causing severe splinter injuries. Despite his worsening condition, he continued his offensive, eliminating two more terrorists in close quarters. Sub Surinder Singh’s unwavering courage and tactical brilliance not only neutralized the immediate threat but also galvanized his comrades. His leadership inspired his team to regroup, take control of the situation, and successfully eliminate the remaining militants, ensuring the safety of the region. As the operation drew to a close, Sub Surinder Singh’s injuries proved fatal. He succumbed to his wounds while being evacuated, leaving behind a legacy of unmatched valor and dedication to duty. His actions epitomized the highest ideals of service, sacrifice, and heroism. In recognition of his extraordinary bravery and indomitable spirit, Subedar Surinder Singh was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military honour. His selfless sacrifice and gallant actions continue to inspire generations of Indians, serving as a poignant reminder of the unwavering commitment of the armed forces to safeguard the nation.

Subedar Surinder Singh is surived by his wife Smt Santosh Kaur.
