Gunner Ayyappan MS hailed from Kalladikode, a quaint town nestled in the Palakkad district of Kerala. Born to Shri Mangaramkottil Sankaran and Smt Leela, he grew up in a family that valued courage and service to the nation. His father and mother, both late, played a significant role in instilling strong values in him during his formative years. Gnr Ayyappan's brother, Suresh Babu, followed a similar path of dedication to the country and served in the prestigious Artillery Regiment of the Indian Army. Gnr Ayyappan completed his schooling at MNKMGHS Pulappatta, a well-known school in Palakkad, where he excelled as a disciplined and hardworking student. Even as a young boy, he displayed an impressive physique and an unwavering determination, which fueled his dream of joining the Indian Army. Encouraged by his patriotism and physical fitness, he actively prepared for the Army recruitment process.
In 1984, his dream became a reality when he got selected during an Army recruitment rally. He joined the Indian Army with a sense of pride and a strong commitment to serve his country. He was recruited into the 219 Field Regiment of the Regiment of Artillery, a distinguished and vital combat support arm of the Indian Army, renowned for its precision and power. The Regiment of Artillery plays a pivotal role in battlefield operations, providing effective firepower support to infantry and mechanized units. This prestigious arm of the Army comprises various specialized regiments, including Medium Regiments, Light Regiments, Missile Regiments, Rocket Regiments, and Surveillance and Target Acquisition (SATA) Regiments. Each regiment is equipped with advanced weaponry and state-of-the-art systems, tailored to fulfill specific operational roles.
Operation Meghdoot: 12 May 1986
During May 1986, Gunner Ayyappan's unit was deployed to one of the most challenging and inhospitable environments on Earth—the Siachen Glacier, located in the northernmost part of India, near the Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL). The harsh conditions of the region, characterized by sub-zero temperatures, high-altitude sickness, high winds, and frequent blizzards, tested the limits of human endurance. The soldiers stationed there had to battle not only the enemy but also the unforgiving natural elements—temperatures plunging as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius (minus 76°F), the constant threat of avalanches, and frostbite. Survival required unmatched training, resilience, and skill. The unit was specifically deployed at the Saltoro Ridge, a strategically vital area southwest of the Siachen Glacier, known for its extreme weather and difficult terrain. Besides enduring the constant danger of enemy fire, the soldiers had to face treacherous natural challenges, such as sudden avalanches and landslides.
On 12th May 1986, Gunner Ayyappan was part of a routine patrol assigned to his unit’s Area of Responsibility (AOR) in a highly volatile region near the border. The mission, though seemingly routine, was fraught with dangers as the area frequently witnessed hostile encounters and cross-border fire. Despite the harsh environment and the constant threat of enemy action, Gunner Ayyappan and his comrades carried out their duties with unwavering resolve and determination. During the patrol, the unit encountered an episode of cross-border firing, a sudden and intense exchange that placed the soldiers in immediate peril. Braving relentless enemy fire, Gunner Ayyappan displayed exemplary courage and presence of mind as he stood his ground, fulfilling his duty to safeguard his unit and the nation. However, amidst the chaos, he sustained grievous injuries while defending his position. The hostile conditions, coupled with the intensity of the situation, made immediate evacuation and medical assistance a formidable challenge. Despite all efforts by his comrades to save him, Gunner Ayyappan tragically succumbed to his injuries and made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
In recognition of his extraordinary courage and selfless service, Gunner Ayyappan was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal, one of the highest honours for bravery in the Indian Army. The medal, a symbol of his unwavering dedication and sacrifice, was received by his mother, Smt Leela, who accepted it with both pride and sorrow—a moment that touched not only the family but also the entire community. Gunner Ayyappan is survived by his brother, Suresh Babu, who also serves in the Indian Army, continuing the family’s proud legacy of service to the nation.
