Sepoy Rajendra Sen

Sepoy Rajendra Sen hailed from Medinipur village in Raghurajnagar Tehsil of Satna district, Madhya Pradesh. Born on 2 July 1975, he was the beloved son of Shri Ramdas Sen and Smt Kalavati Sen. He was the only son in a family of seven children and grew up alongside his six sisters, becoming a pillar of strength and affection within the household. Raised in the simplicity of rural Madhya Pradesh, Sep Rajendra imbibed the values of discipline, humility, hard work, and responsibility from an early age. He completed his schooling in his native village, where he earned the affection of his teachers and friends for his sincere nature and determined spirit. Even as a young boy, he nurtured a deep sense of patriotism and often dreamed of wearing the olive-green uniform of the Indian Army and dedicating his life to the service of the nation.

While pursuing his aspirations, Sep Rajendra also embraced family responsibilities. In 1995, he married Ms Parvati, who became his steadfast companion through every phase of his life. Their happiness grew further when they were blessed with a son, Vikas, on 03 March 1997, bringing immense joy to the family. Determined to fulfil his lifelong dream of serving the country, Sep Rajendra appeared for the recruitment process of the Indian Army with unwavering confidence and perseverance. His dedication bore fruit when he successfully cleared the rigorous selection process and was inducted into the Indian Army on 5 November 1998. He was recruited into the 16 Madras Battalion of the Madras Regiment, one of the oldest and most distinguished infantry regiments of the Indian Army. Renowned for its illustrious history, unwavering discipline, and countless acts of gallantry, the regiment provided Rajendra with the perfect platform to serve the nation with honour. As he donned the uniform, he carried not only his lifelong dream but also the hopes and pride of his family, embarking on a journey of courage, duty, and selfless service.

Jammu & Kashmir Operation: 05 Sept 1999

During the Kargil War of 1999, the peace along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir was shattered when the Indian Army detected a large-scale intrusion by Pakistani Army regulars and paramilitary forces, who had occupied dominating heights across the Kargil region. The enemy's occupation of these strategic positions posed a grave threat to India's territorial integrity and the vital Srinagar-Leh Highway, prompting the Indian Army to launch Operation Vijay to evict the infiltrators and reclaim every inch of Indian territory. As part of this massive military campaign, 16 Madras Battalion was deployed to the rugged and inhospitable Sector, one of the fiercest theatres of the Kargil conflict. The battalion was entrusted with the critical responsibility of checking enemy infiltration, securing vulnerable stretches along the Line of Control, and undertaking aggressive operations against hostile positions whenever required. The soldiers had to operate in treacherous mountainous terrain, where steep cliffs, freezing temperatures, thin air, and constant enemy observation made every movement a challenge.

Although Operation Vijay culminated in India's victory on 26 July 1999, the situation along the Line of Control did not immediately return to normal. Enemy infiltration attempts continued, intermittent cross-border firing and localized skirmishes persisted, and Indian troops remained deployed in a high state of operational readiness to prevent fresh incursions and secure the reclaimed positions. The area continued to witness active military operations as troops maintained constant vigilance in the difficult mountain terrain. It was during these demanding post-war operations that Sepoy Rajendra Sen continued to serve with unwavering dedication and courage. On 5 September 1999, while deployed in the J&K during an operation against enemy infiltrators, he came under hostile action while carrying out his assigned mission. Despite the dangers of the battlefield, he remained steadfast in the discharge of his duty, exemplifying the discipline and fighting spirit for which the Madras Regiment is renowned. During the operation, Sepoy Rajendra Sen sustained grievous injuries and later succumbed to them, making the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation. His sacrifice became a source of immense pride for his family, his village, and the proud legacy of the 16 Madras Battalion.

Sepoy Rajendra Sen is survived by his wife, Smt Parvati Sen, and their son, Shri Vikas Sen.
